Due to time constraints and weather, I have to stay indoors. Are jumping jacks effective in weight loss and ripping (toning) of body? If so, what amount, speed, and frequency do I do them at? I do not want to run because it is not feasible for me at this time of the year. I just need something that is as effective and can be done in a single room.

Jumping jacks alone, no, but over all they are good for weight loss. For me, a 6 ft 180lbs guy I lose 776 carbs per hr doing jumping jacks... i wouldn't suggest doing em for a hour

After gaining almost 60 lbs. from my last pregnancy, I REALLY need to lose the weight. I am contemplating joining weight watchers, but am not certain it is the best plan for me. At the moment, I'm on my own diet, I just picked up a lot of tips from here and there and combined them. I cut out a lot of junk food in my diet, I replaced crisps and coke with fruit/ veg and drank water instead.I also keep a food diary which helps show me what I am eating and where I was going wrong, it's amazing when you look at what you eat over the day, you don't realize at the time that one biscuit here and there adds up.
The most important thing for me was exercise!! I started of gradually, I bought a few dvds, which you can buy cheaply on Amazon in their sales, and i also started using my treadmill which was bought and never used!! So far I have lost a stone in the past four or five months.
It's also good to lose weight with someone as it helps to motivate you, but once you start exercising and drinking between 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day, you will soon start to see the benefits. And don't be strict, allow yourself treats, once or twice a week, you wont stick to it otherwise

Both are good for weight loss, but the most important thing is to get your heart rate to 80 percent of it's max for about 30 minutes at a time. If you don't want to gain that much muscle, it would probably be better to run because cycling will really build your leg muscles. If you run, you're also moving your arms so you will also give them a little tone. I hole heartedly understand your fear of getting attacked by a dog. My sophomore year of college, I lived in a really rundown neighborhood and had a neighbor who kept her german shepherd outside all the time which was fine until she gave birth. After that, the dog became quite territorial and even though she was familiar with me would sometimes chase me. After it happened twice, I decided to go running at parks where dogs were required to be kept on their leash at all times since I couldn't afford a gym membership. If you can make it to a swimming pool 3-5 days a week, you might want to consider that too. Swimmers, in my opinion, have some of the best bodies out there. No matter what workout you choose, make sure to stretch a couple of times a day. This will help lengthen your muscles over time, so you still get the strength and tone from the muscle you gain from working out to give you more of a sleek build. Good luck on your weight loss and don't forget to eat smart.

I find that drinking water helps a lot in shedding weight. It isn't so much the water but the lack of sugar that's in drinks that does it.

None of those will really work unless you exercise. Any doctor will tell you that.It's not so much what you eat (if eating responsibly), but more how you work it off. The most effective weight loss program is one that you will enjoy doing. If you enjoy doing it, you will keep it up and do it without that dreaded feeling that you have to do it.
As far as eating goes, cup your hands together to form a little bowl. What you eat should be no more than that. Figure out what three to three and a half hand fulls will be and divide it up into five small portions. Eating five small potions daily while exercising vigorously daily will help you lose fat. Now, depending on your work out program, you may be gaining muscle weight. Muscle weighs more than fat but takes up less size or space. Once you drop as much fat as your body can, you might stat gaining weight as you increase muscle.
Aerobic exercises burn more fat. And the more muscle you have, the more fat you will lose also.
Start by choosing an aerobic exercise plan that excites you and sounds really fun.
Running, jogging, dancing and speed walking are aerobic. The goal is to get your heart rate up and keep it up for as long as possible while not killing yourself doing it.
Hell, just turn on your radio and dance by yourself in the privacy of your own home one hour a day will work. That dude that did the sweating to the oldies made a killing selling that plan (and you really don't need to buy anything).
Alternate your workouts. Dance on hour one day, speed walk the next day, dance the third, Jog the fourth. If you own a treadmill use it, but getting outside is better because you don't get bored looking at the wall. Start out with a distance, say one mile or so. The goal at first isn't time, but actually finishing the distance. after two weeks, increase the distance a little. after a month or so go back to one mile and work on speed.
Also, work on your core. Situps, crunches, leg lifts will work the core (from your armpits to your waist)
Again, the perfect plan is what you find fun and will want to do. You can try various things without spending a dime extra, with the exception of shoes. If you start jogging and running all the time, expect to buy new sneakers about every six months.
