If a tadpole’s tail is cut off, it will grow a new one. If a salamander’s leg is cut off, it will grow a new one. If an earthworm is cut in half, it will eventually grow a new half. Regeneration in lower forms of animals has been known about for at least a century in the scientific community. The primary reason lower forms of animals are able to regenerate lost limbs while higher forms such as humans can't, has been the subject of much conjecture. The most reasonable explanations include:

1. Stem cells in lower forms of animals are plentiful and available in sufficient concentrations to hasten regeneration.

2. Stem cells are in closer proximity- meaning that these animals have very simple organs that aren't nearly as compartmentalized as those of higher animal forms. What this means is that once a cell has differentiated into a heart cell or lung cell, it is committed. It cannot reverse the process. And, since stem cells are not that plentiful in the normal bloodstream of higher animal forms such as humans, the ability to regenerate lost tissues is limited.

3. Finally, the amount of differentiation of cells into more complex and different types of organs is not quite so pronounced in earthworms and salamanders as compared with higher forms of animals. Brains, heart, and lung tissue are highly developed, very complex organs. And... these organs are located far away from a large supply of stem cells since stem cells are rarely found in the peripheral blood. An earthworm or salamander doesn't have to worry about this problem!

Mammals do have the ability to “regenerate” to the extent that most wounds will heal over time.

However, the ability to heal degenerative processes or manufacture new organs has been an elusive target.

At least until recently... It turns out that stem cells, the progenitor cells of all cells in the body, are what allow massive healing to take place. (By progenitor, I mean that stem cells are capable of differentiating into any type of organ cell).

In higher mammals such as humans, the number of stem cells required for massive regeneration is not available under normal circumstances.

Stem cells are sparse in the general blood circulation. They are,though, present within bone marrow where they are called "mesenchymal stem cells."

However, in the adult, even in the bone marrow, stem cells need to be concentrated in order to be effective for tissue regenerative processes.

The lack of sufficient stem cells in peripheral tissues as well as the absence of triggering mechanisms which can send the stem cells into the "warp speed” required to help with regeneration also aren’t present under normal circumstances.

It is this relative lack and access to stem cells that has presented researchers with the problem of how to produce the same kind of healing in human beings as is seen in lower forms of animals.

Recent development in stem cell biology has shown much promise.

For instance, autologous stem cells (cells obtained directly from the patient) have been used to help heal an ailing heart (National Geographic, July 2008). And in a more recent article (Parade Magazine, September 28, 2008), investigators at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City have mentioned the possible application of stem cells and platelet rich plasma in the treatment of arthritis.

It appears that a number of requirements must be met in order for the magic of stem cells to take hold for conditions such as osteoarthritis. First, a large number of stem cells are required. This involves taking stem cells from the bone marrow of the patient and concentrating them. Second, the stem cells must be viable, meaning the concentration process cannot damage the stem cells. Third, a “trigger” such as platelet rich plasma must be provided in order for certain substances such as growth hormone to stimulate the stem cells to replicate and differentiate.

Fourth, the arthritis area must be prepared properly. That means “injury” must be induced. Injury should be sufficient to induce stem cells to proliferate and differentiate but not enough to render stem cell therapy useless. In other words, special techniques need to be applied.

Fifth, the stem cells and platelet rich plasma must be introduced in such a fashion that a framework or scaffold is prepared so that stem cells have a place to “latch onto to” so they can accomplish what needs to be done.

A small number of centers in the U.S. are working on such as procedure. Early results look promising.

At the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland, exciting work in the field of stem cells and their application to treating osteoarthritis is ongoing.

According to Clinical Director, Dr. Nathan Wei, “Stem cell research is probably the future of treatment for osteoarthritis. We have to work on newer and better techniques... and also provide data that can be used to assess the efficacy of this type of therapy. To date we have treatments that help with symptoms... but we need therapies that can actually regrow cartilage and other damaged connective tissue.

Currently, we are in the middle of some very interesting work that looks very encouraging. The results are in the preliminary stages, so while the early evidence is extremely promising, longer term data is needed.

We are harvesting and concentrating mesenchymal stem cells. We are also providing a scaffold for stem cells to proliferate and grow.

Unfortunately, cartilage tissue grows relatively slowly... but we have to be patient. If the objective evidence- thickening... or growth of cartilage- matches the symptomatic improvement we've seen, this will be a major breakthrough!”

  The 2008 accord is the 8th generation accord. It offers 3different engines. A 166hp 2.4l I4, a 200hp 2.4l I4, and a 268hp 3.5l v6. The sedans get better MPG than the coupe because of the VCM they've added. But take note theat the MPG will be lower for all because the new 2008 MPG calculations, everything will be lower.
  
  The new accord is classified as a Large car by the EPA and is very spacious! IMO its a looker!! If you decide to go for it, i reccomend the EX or EX-l sedan. The EX models only recieve v6s this year but the EX I4 has 200hp!

  Rumor that the Crossroad will be the new Element is just a rumor. If anything, it may be an addition to the Honda line of vehicles sold in the US. It's more likely that it will just be a crossover SUV for the Japanese market. The current Element is built in Ohio. The Crossroad is built in Japan.

  You pry off the trim piece that goes around the stereo and vent controls. Then the stock radio just has two tabs one on each side that you have to depress down, then it just slides out. Your aftermarket dashkit (if you got the right one) will also just have two tabs. Just slide it in and it'll snap into place. I prefer using scosche kits and wire harnesses.

  If your husband's truck is a regular cab 1/2 ton, the box can be either 6'6" or 8'. If it is an extended cab half ton, it could be 5'10", 6'6", or 8'. If it is a crew cab 1/2 ton, it is 5'10"
  If his truck is a 3/4 ton, it is either 6'6" or 8'.
  Just sneak out there with a measuring tape and measure the length of the inside of the box from the back of the cab to the front of the tailgate with the tailgate up. You may be off by an inch or so, but it is one of the above lengths.

how are the side moldings on the silverado. are they on clips or with some kind of adhesive. (2007 silverado new body style)

  Most of the side moldings are a thick rubber that is held on with a strong 3M double sided tape.You should stop by you local auto part store for a can of trim release agent.You can use a heat gun to heat the molding to loosen the grip and peal the molding off.Do not over heat the molding or paint in that area that might caues paint damage.Then use the trim spray to clean up the glue left on the body.Best of luck.

  Well, we only know of one planet with life, and we've found no fossils from a time when the earth was less than about 1 billion years old (even then, we've only found the equivalent of very primitive microbes), so as far as we know, a newly formed planet would be devoid of any organisms.
  
  Edited for Additional Details: You can't necessarily say that any life that is on a new planet came from space. In fact, it's much more likely that it developed independently on that planet.
  
  Think about this--for life to have been deposited on a planet, it had to come from somewhere else. Since our current theory is that all planets in a system form at roughly the same time, it's not likely to have come from another planet in the same system.
  
  If this life developed somehow in space, it would be badly suited to life on a planet. It would have evolved for the conditions you find in space (microgravity and constant intense sunlight) which are not the conditions you'd find on a planet (much higher gravity, and half the time in darkness). So it probably didn't form in space--it wouldn't survive the conditions on a planet.
  
  That leaves it coming from another planetary system. It would take an immense amount of time to get from one system to another, and that life would be evolved for living on a planet, not in space. Plus, the odds of life traveling from one tiny speck of rock and hitting another tiny speck trillions of miles away are almost nonexistent.
  
  If you're thinking "What if some intelligent race brought it from another system?" then ask yourself this: Where did _that_ life come from? And repeat the cycle all over again.

How to cloth a new body?
I have always been pretty small, wide hips, but skinny. size 3-4 or 5-6 and about 115-120 lbs. Well, that was two years ago anyways. Over the past 2 years I've gained a good amount of weight. I've always been a little bigger on the bottom, which is even bigger, but now i've started to gain weight on my belly which is totally new for me. I'm at about 157 lbs. Now I know it's my fault and I'm not gonna complain about it, and I'm really not too upset about the weight. My husband doesn't mind, he seems to like me just as much, maybe more. So since he doesn't mind, neither do I. But lately I've started to realize I don't know how to dress this body! Before I could wear anything tight and low cut and it looked good. I really can't pull that off anymore. I hate trying things on, especially since I dont reallt know my size so I've just been cover up in oversized shirts. This isn't me! I've lost my style. Anyone know how to dress a 150-160 lb body???

  Just make sure the fabrics aren't too clingy or stretchy, but not too stiff either, well-tailored and non-see through pieces should work well. Try using control-top underwear as well for the stomach area.

will my generic lenses for my canon AF work on a new digital body?
OK, i currently have an Canon Elan 7. for that camera i have a few lenses.. but not canon lenses. they are by manufacturers such as sigma, tameron, etc.. i have read that Canons auto focus lenses will work on the new digital body cameras(i am looking at getting a 20D), but they never say anything about the non-mfg lenses. does anyone know if they will work as well, or is this not a clear cut answer?

  There's not a clear cut answer. In general, most will work or can be made to work. However Canon doesn't support third party lenses, so they leave it up to the lens manufacturer to rechip a lens if it doesn't work with newer bodies. Go ahead and get the 20D and if a lens doesn't work, contact the appropriate manufacturer and get a price for rechipping the lens to make it work with the newer body. Since the 20D has been out for several years, you can search to see if there are any known incapability problems with a particular third party lens and the 20D.
  
  Unfortunately, this is a price you sometimes have to pay by getting a third party lens. Physically it will mount on the camera no problem, but electronic communication may not take place as the mount is reversed engineered since Canon doesn't license (at least I don't think so) their EF spec.
