Get Your Body Into Extreme Shape

Shape Your Body

Food and weight obsession has become a national pastime. Nearly 4 out of 5 women hate their bodies. This leads to incredible feelings of shame and self denial. Most of us have been taught to idolize the skinny models that adorn fashion magazines. We were also led into years of dieting dysfunction by our well meaning families and friends attempting to help us achieve society's thin ideal.

As a woman who has struggled with emotional eating for 35 years, I thought the answer was finding the right diet. Now I know better.

Recently it has been revealed and admitted by the medical community that diets just don't work for 90-98% of all people. In the April 2007 issue of The American Psychologist, the Journal of the American Psychological Association, UCLA researchers reported that diets don't work in the long run.

According to the latest results of a composite study done at UCLA, Traci Mann, Associate Professor of Psychology at UCLA and lead author of the study said, "We found that the majority of people regained the weight, plus more. Sustained weight loss was found only in a small minority of participants while complete weight regain was found in the majority. Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefits for the majority of people."

For so many years, I bounced back and forth from diet to diet, until I found Weight Watchers and followed through, going back as many as 20 times in an attempt to lose weight. Then in 2001, I finally reached my goal weight. I managed to keep the weight off for over 6 years, thinking that I had it all figured out. Yet my life was miserable. I was caught in patterns of overeating, skipping meals, over-exercising and in constant fear of regaining the weight. I thought if only I could control what I was eating, I'd be okay. I was wrong. The problem was not what I was eating, but what was eating me! Now I realize that the dieting was a part of the problem that distracted me from looking at parts of my life that were unfulfilling.

  18. QUESTION:
The best way to lose weight and shape your body in 1 month?
I'm excercising everyday about 30 minutes. Would that be enough?

    • ANSWER:
Cardio for 30 minutes a day is great! But here are some other suggestions to consider:

You need a good combination of aerobic activity and resistance training combined with a healthy diet.

It is not recommended to lose more than 1-3 lbs a week. If you want to lose weight the correct and safe way that will stay off for the long-term you need a good exercise and nutrition plan.

A good program looks like this:

Always warm up and cool down

Muscular strength & endurance-you need a good resistance training program that includes exercises for all muscle groups(hips, chest, upper and mid back, legs (quads and hamstrings), shoulders, lower back, upper arms (biceps and triceps), calves, forearms, abdomen, and the gluteus maximus).
Your intensity should be 70-80% 1-RM or 8-12-RM, 8-12 reps, 1 or more sets, 3 times a week for 6 weeks or more. You should begin with 1 exercise for each major muscle group and make sure the days you do resistance training are not consecutive meaning you don't exercise the same muscle group two days in a row. As you continue your program you can add more exercises, add weight, and change up your program to include more days or just work specific muscle groups on specific days. As your muscles grow stronger you will be able to reduce the rest time between each set. You should rest for about 30 seconds between sets. Muscle is metabolically active and therefore when you gain muscle it burns more calories and helps to raise your metabolism.
If you do not have money for a gym membership or do not have acess to one here is a great website to create a work out plan only using your body weight.
      http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.php?MainMuscle=&Equip=BodyOnly&Isolation=
You can also search for all kinds of exercises that use weight.

Cardiovascular Endurance-this is where you can burn fat the most and that leads to enhancing your muscles such as the abs. You need to include a warm-up and cool-down. I have an extensive answer on this section if you would like to read it
      http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuX3lm8.Tv.BqmVmNUvrkGDsy6IX?qid=20060712075759AAvmuOF

Body Composition-this includes your body fat percentage, bone frame, as well as how much muscle you have. Most people focus on only weight, but you should not put as much focus on that as much as what your body fat percentage is (get it tested at an exercise facility with skinfold calipers). You should also get circumference measurements done. This includes your neck, shoulder, chest, waist, abdominal, hip (buttocks), thigh (proximal), thigh (mid), thigh (distal), knee, calf, ankle, arm (bicep), forearm, and wrist. You should be able to do this at a gym. You should get all of this information done before you start your program and then you can see how you improve.

Flexibility- Most people do not even think about this, but it is very important because it helps to prevent injury and it helps you to perform every day activities. It also has an effect on all your other programs. You should perform 10-12 flexibility exercises every day. Slowly stretch the muscle to a point of mild discomfort but not necessarily pain. Hold stretch for 10-30 seconds, and do 3-5 reps for each stretch. This should take about 15-30 minutes per session. If you do not have time to do this every day, try to do it 2-3 times a week.

You have to make sure that you eat right and that means following the food guide pyramid. I have another answer that discusses this

  22. QUESTION:
When you lose weight, does your body shape stay the same?
I want to lose some weight, maybe 10-15 lbs, but I'm worried that if I do I'll lose my curves. Right now my measurements are 36d-29-39 and I feel like I'm too thick, but I do like the overall shape of my body. I want to have the same proportions just a few inches smaller. Most of my extra weight is fat, not muscle. If I shed the pounds, will I keep my shape?

    • ANSWER:
Not likely...the areas you suggest feel "thick" to you are the places most women carry fat. If you diet and exercise to lose weight, it is more likely you will slim down these areas (women have a tendency to gain weight from the feet up and lose weight from the head down to you will notice loss in your face and breasts first). No reason though that you couldn't try toning some areas more to try to keep the hourglass shape (like doing side bends for the waist more than say squats for the bottom).

  23. QUESTION:
Is it possible to change your body shape if you work out a lot?
My friend is a dancer(27 years old) and her real shape always was a pear.Since we were young she was skinny and her legs were fuller than her bust. But the last 2 years she works a lot, eats too less and only proteins and has changed! She looks like a hourglass. She even says her bust and hip circumference is the same. How can this happen?

    • ANSWER:
Your basic body shape is determined by genetics. But, you can alter the basic form by building up specific parts of your body. Your body also collects fat in specific parts, as determined by genetics. So, you can also lose body fat to alter your basic form.

One area where many people put on a lot of weight is the hips and thighs. But, they may not have much noticeable increase in size from fat in their upper body. This then gives them a pear shape. But building up the upper body (shoulders, chest, and upper back) and then lowering the body fat composition, a pear shaped person can transform him or herself into a more proportional classic human body shape.

I used to belong to a gym where I would see pretty much the same people most of the time. There was this one guy who constantly worked on his chest and arms, which were very big and well defined. But, he obviously never did any kind of lower body work, because he was pretty much a stick from the waist down. It looked pretty strange and I always wondered why he would spend so much time and energy working his chest and arms to perfection, but completely ignore the rest of his body.

  24. QUESTION:
Is it too late to really change your body shape?
I'm a 31 yr old male. I am a yoyo dieter and go from losing weight to putting it back on. I have never been sporty so have never been 'fit' looking. If I put my mind to it could I achieve a beach body for the summer or is it impossible if you have never had an exercise routine? I have about a stone and a half to lose and currently do no exercise. Any tips to achieve this please if you are lacking in motivation?

    • ANSWER:
no it is not too late. you will need to clean up your diet and start exercising.

join a gym, it will encourage you to train. get a training buddy, this will help you keep your training sessions instead of letting your friend down.

the gym will have personal trainers who can write you a suitable training programme.

you can get vast amounts of diet info online.

you can safely lose 1 pound a week so to lose a stone and a half savely you need 5 months.

    • ANSWER:
BMI isn't all that accurate in the first place because it doesn't take into account muscle mass

I go to the gym and was taught this exercise for ab improvement. Sit on the ball and roll it forwards (with feet square out front) until you feel the base of your spine on the edge. Then cross your arms across your chest and lean back (as if doing a sit up) make sure you keep the weight in your legs & fete otherwise you wil go over head first!)/. 43. QUESTION:
Are you satisfied with your body shape?
Girls!! Do you care about your body curves?
Boys!! Do you try to be muscular?

    • ANSWER:
All girls care about their body, and almost all of them are unhappy with it whether they are skinny or big, big or small breasted, round or flat bum. I know girls who are perfect and complain about something all the time. Guys seem in general to be more accepting of their shape.

  44. QUESTION:
Is it possible for your body shape and frame to change over years?
Basically i've got photos of when i was 14/15 yrs old and i look completely different to how i do now - i've just gone 20. It's not even just the face, its my whole body frame that seems to look completely different, i looked so bulky n chunky back then, is it possible for the bone structure to shrink?!

    • ANSWER:
It is certainly possible for your body shape and frame to change over the years. And yes, your bones can sliiightly shrink. But rarely noticably until you're at retirement age. A 6ft person at 21 is very unlikely to be 6ft at 65.

Bone density can decrease approx 10% every 10 years. And you can lose cartilidge between the joints and in the spinal column. This tends to accelerate as you age. It's important to maintain a regular weight-bearing regime!

More likely for yourself it will be the distribution of weight over time. As you get older your body likes to shift its weight to other areas. For a guy its the stomach, for the woman its ass and hips.

Find out how much you've grown, and how much weight you've gained/lost. It's possible to gain weight and lose inches!

  48. QUESTION:
how to get toned without losing your body shape...is it possible?
I have lost about 10 pounds and i want my body to be more toned. I was wondering what I can possibly do to obtain those results. I want to focus on toning my legs and stomach. I like the shape of my body and do not wish to lose any more weight from other areas. Whenever I try to lose weight my face gets really skinny. Is that normal?

    • ANSWER:
low weight, high reps. Muscle weighs more than fat. So after lifting weights for weeks you will gain weight but its good weight.

  49. QUESTION:
Anyone know of any sites where you can find out what your body shape is?

I'm in the UK magazines rarely do sections for different body shapes here and if they do it's for the more extreme (can't think of a better word) of the scale eg, tall 6ft+ , curvy is usually for uk size 20+ and petite is 5'1 or under and below a UK 8.
I'm single. And I don't want to know my bodyshape to impress men, I want to find it out so I know how to dress for it.

    • ANSWER:
I don't know of any websites in particular, but if you want to know your body shape, it might not be as hard as you think.
There are four main body shapes that basically everyone falls into. They are petite, tall, pear, and curvy.
Once looking at those categories you may find that you fall into one of them.
Just about every magazine has a section dedicated to different body shapes. Try magazines like Seventeen and Teen Vogue. If you want something more mature, check out In Style or Glamour.
