Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Races of women and body shapes, what is the purpose of each considering their environment?
For each race of woman can you explain what role her environment, culture, and society had in the body shape they possess?

I have outlined below relative to each race what the usual body shape tend to be.

I have noticed the bone structures and fat distribution different women tend to have based on race.

Asian women have wide bone structures and flattened bodies and tend to be shorter than other races of women or petite. There body fat seems to be evenly distributed throughout their frames. They often times lack large breasts or buttocks that other race of women have. As they age and gain weight they grow horizontally or they get "wider."

    Older Asian woman
    old woman, hanging quilts

African women tend to have narrow bone structures and they tend to be taller than other races of women or slender and tall. They tend to store less fat due to the fact that they possess a small bit more of muscle mass than other races. They store fat mostly in the hips, thighs and buttocks. They usually have very well defined waists. As they age and gain weight they grow :"outward" instead of wide.

    Older African woman
    grandmother and her grandsons

Caucasian women have a wide bone structure as well although not as wide as Asian women but wider than African women. Caucasian women are usually of moderate height compared to petite or shorter Asian women and taller African women. Caucasian women tend to store fat mostly in their bosoms and hips. This usually produces the signature hour glass shape that mostly Caucasian women possess (I don't mean that it is superior but just something that is signature to Caucasian women but it shows up in other races as well although not as often). As they age and gain weight they tend to gain weight similar to Asian women as in they get "wide" although since their bone structure is not as wide as an Asian woman's in the first place they don't get as "wide."

Young thin Caucasian women with typically moderately wide bone structures.

Please don't be offended by any of these example or traits I have applied to each race of women. These are general and "usual" it doesn't mean that certain individuals within these racial groups won't deviate from these usual body shapes.

  4. QUESTION:
What form of women’s body shape was preferred in medieval Europe?

    • ANSWER:
As "respectable" women's bodies were generally covered in much of the Middle Ages--and in fact, the body in general was looked on as something shameful--a "body type" was not developed until the end of the Middle Ages and really not until the Renaissance. Indeed, as the body was considered the source of sin, it was generally idealized negatively.

As such, to the degree that there was a beauty type, it tended to focus on the face. Much value was placed on a white complexion, an idea that survived until the twentieth century. Moreover, the mouth was considered the most sensual part of the body: full, red lips were a sign of sexuality. Gapped front teeth were also considered especially sensuous.

You might want to look at several pieces of medieval literature to help. I would suggest "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," "The Romance of the Rose," and the The Wife of Bath's Tale in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales."

      Cheers.

    Hi!
Now I am writing the advertisement copy for slimming gel in English. Though I search the sentence including “S-line” in many websites, it’s not easy. So, I am wondering if this expression (S-line) is not correct English. “S-line” is used for expressing and praising the good shape (body line) of women in Korea. So, I need to know whether this expression is Korean style expression or not. Is this expression used in English native countries? If not, could you recommend me other expressions to express the good body shape? I heard some expression (hourglass figure, in shape, …) from my friend. But, I am not sure. Your help would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,Jeanie!

“ Shape your bright S-line with anti-cellulite formula”(advertisment for body slimming gel)..Do you think this copy is correct or makes sense? If not, could you recommend other expression?

  11. QUESTION:
Are certain body shapes superior, or does it depend on the individual?
It's often said, for instance, that the hour glass figure is the best.

Often the pear shaped figure is frowned upon, and considered very flawed/ugly.

Yet there are some pear shaped women, like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who are considered to have beautiful figures. Perhaps the fact they're toned has something to do with it lol?

Do you think that there certain body shapes are better, or does it depend on the individual?
    Thanks =)

    • ANSWER:
I think it usually depends on the individual. I don't think you can say that every hourglass is always better than a pear. Like you've said, some pears have great figures, like Beyonce. Her figure is far better than someone like Holly Willoughby, say, who is quite bulky.

  12. QUESTION:
Is a women's body shape the same no matter whether they are thin or fat?

  17. QUESTION:
What's the healthiest/ most feminine body shape for women? Confused...?
Some places say hourglass, but i don't understand that, because:

    1) 60% of women are pear shaped, only about 9% are hourglasses. Women's bodies have developed into the 'pear shape' way for a reason.

    2) Fat distribution relies on hormones.
Estrogenic= store fat below waist, on hips, butt, legs.
Androgenic (male hormone) = store on waist, back/chest, shoulders, arms.

Hourglass = store weight on shoulders, arms & back; caused by the male hormone.
Pear = small shoulders, arms & back, caused by estrogen telling the body to store less weight there.

Lower body fat (pears storre more than hourglasses) affects child bearing, usually.
Recent studies show hip/butt/thigh fat (omega 3/6/9 fat) has protective properties towards babies in the womb.

Upper body fat doesn't, & hourglasses store a lot of it.... They lay down equal amounts of upper & lower body fat.

Babies are carried where we have more body fat. Narrower torso and wider lower body means carrying lower, and the baby often comes out more efficiently (note it's body shape, not size).

    2) Whereas breast fat is dormant in child bearing. It's the milk ducts (which estrogen causes) what do all the work.

These glands (boobs) are just an upper body fat store women have, men don't. So if a woman stores upper body fat, she'll get a lot of breast fat.... Which is NOT to do with estrogen; upper body fat is sent there by androgens.

Bigger boobs (more fat) have no advantage to breast feeding, infact, larger breasts tend to lead to difficulty. Small breasts don't.

Beauty is signs of youth/ fertility, scientists say, as younger women are better child bearers.
Large breasts drop a lot more than smaller ones after kids because of their weight, a giveaway sign your body's aged. Yet smaller boobs, stay higher, appearing more youthful/healthy.

    Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
I think a LOT of people do prefer the pear shape but mistake it for hourglass. I often hear Beyonce and Kim Kardashian referred to as hourglass, but they are actually pear shaped. Pears can still have big boobs (for their frame), but unlike hourglasses they have the narrow shoulders and small ribcages and don't store excess fat around upper arms and back.

I'm a pear shape with small-average boobs. Not saying I wouldn't mind bigger boobs, but not at the expense of having a big ribcage, broad shoulders and flabby arms and back.

  21. QUESTION:
    different races, different body shapes?
i know in general, black women are known for apple-shaped bodies, asian women tend to have straighter bodies (up & down), etc. what's latinas'?
i didnt mean to offend anyone and yes in this case i am generalizing. so what? i'm aware there are exceptions and everyone is different. But its a known scientific fact that black women carry their most of their fat in their "buttox", therefore giving the apple shape. this was in no way meant to be an offensive question.

    • ANSWER:
I can spot a Lakota from a hundred yards away. Different populations do have different shapes. I can usually tell Latina ladies from their general shape from far away. Asians are pretty easy to spot as well. Blacks are actually harder to tell at a distance. I am more familiar with the female form except the Lakota men. They have long skinny legs and a distinctive waist. Humans are very good at pattern recognition and spotting different populations by their shape is actually pretty easy. General shape is the first thing I see when I look at a person. I am not a bigot or anything. I just can't help noticing. I didn't want to get into specifics though.

  22. QUESTION:
Where can I find articles based on race and body shape?
Ok so I'm doing a research article on how the media affects body image in a negative way. Here is my research paper so far.

Body image is universal, it’s the perception each individual has on physical appearance. It can be described as the image reflected when looking n a mirror, the image displayed in the brain when they visualize their appearance, or the image they create when pertaining to the idealistic body. The media instills impractical body images that standardize beauty. Women magazines are full of articles urging that weight loss may be a key to success; it may be a way to keep a healthy stable relationship or marriage and a rewarding profession. Celebrities and models are selling their body parts to the public and the majority of people are absorbing the fabrications. You don’t need to have an ideal body weight, every woman is different. Everyday thousands of women struggle with the idealized body image based off fallacy presented in the media.
The women body occurs in different types of shapes – every ethnic group is different therefore each race has women with diverse weight, height and shape. Yet the media tries to neglect the differences. The media projects subliminal messages that state “slim is in.” However, the body is a genetic trait: you cannot change your bone structure or shape. No one takes in consideration each race has different body shapes.

However, I can not find ANY ARTICLES that I can use to defend my statement. Each race has DIFFERENT BODY TYPES. That's pretty much obvious. Not to be racist, but generally, African Americans and Hispanics gain weight relatively in their hips, thighs and buttocks. The majority of asians have slim narrow bodies, lacking curvy figures. And white women, although some do have curvy figures, most of them are narrow or thin. I'm basing this off women I see everyday. Not off celebrities who have been airbrushed or used surgery

NOW CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIND A ARTICLE that can show the different body shapes with RACE.

  29. QUESTION:
What is the cause of some women having more androgen in their bodies than estrogen?
    Female shapes
The Source, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, 1856Independent of fat percentage, weight or width, female body shapes are categorised into one of four elementary geometric shapes,[1] though there are very wide ranges of actual sizes within each shape:

    Apple (triangle downward)
Apple shaped women have broad(er) shoulders compared to their (narrower) hips.[1] Women of this body type have (much) higher androgen levels compared to women with other body types[citation needed]. Because of this high androgen level, the skeleton develops in a very masculine pattern. Apple shaped women tend to have slim legs/thighs, while the abdomen and chest look out of proportion compared to the rest of the body. Fat is mainly distributed in the abdomen, chest, and face.
    Banana or straight (rectangular)
The waist measurement is less than 9 inches smaller than the hips or bust measurement.[1] The body has a relatively high androgen level compared to the estrogen level[citation needed]; this causes the skeleton to develop in a bit more masculine pattern and body fat to be distributed predominantly in the abdomen, buttocks, chest, and face. This overall fat distribution creates the typical ruler (straight) shape.
Pear or spoon or bell (triangle upward)
The hip measurement is greater than the bust measurement.[1] The distribution of fat varies, with fat tending to deposit first in the buttocks, hips, and thighs. As body fat percentage increases, an increasing proportion of body fat is distributed around the waist and upper abdomen. The women of this body type tend to have a (relatively) larger rear, robust thighs, and a small(er) bosom.

Mohini an avatar of Vishnu shows an hourglass body shape.Hourglass shape. (triangles opposing, facing in)
The hip and bust are almost of equal size with a narrow waist.[1] Body fat distribution tends to be around both the upper body and lower body. This body type enlarges the arms, chest, hips, and rear before other parts, such as the waist and upper abdomen.
A study of over 6,000 women carried out by researchers at the North Carolina State University around 2005 found that 46% were banana (rectangular), just over 20% pear, just under 14% apple, and 8% hourglass.[1] Another study has found "that the average woman's waistline had expanded by six inches since the 1950s" and that today women are taller and have bigger busts and hips than those of the 1950s.[1]

  32. QUESTION:
Opinion: What is the ideal body shape for a woman?
Men, what is your dream girl's body shape? Women, are you happy the way you are or would you change something? No harsh comments, no judging. An opinion is an opinion
http://www.glamour.com/images/fashion/2010/05/0505-sexiest-swimsuit-for-your-shape-49_li.jpg What do you you think? Now, I'm not doing this to make myself feel better or to judge anyone. We are all different. I have been hearing a lot of superficial things that guys say about girls, so I wanted to see what everyone really thinks

    • ANSWER:
I'm happy with the way I am, but it took me a long time to get that way. I just turned 27, and I was not comfortable with myself until after I had my 3rd baby (he's 9 months old now). I'm kind of a cross between the size 12 girl and the size 16 girl in the picture (my shape from the hips up is like the size 16 girl, and from the hips down more like the size 12 girl). I wear a size 12 and I feel great about me. If there was one thing I could change, it would be to get rid of one of my stretch marks-it looks like a Y that meets at my belly button, but it's not that big of a deal.
Girls, be happy with who you are and love yourself! Oh, and I think all 4 girls in the picture are beautiful.

  33. QUESTION:
    women's body shape...?
guys are always talking about a woman's "specifications".......they have like these measurements for the perfect body size.....i think they have like 3; for the chest,waist...etc....

what are those? what do guys consider the most alluring size?

    • ANSWER:
It's kind of an old stereotype. In the past, guys used to say 36-24-36 was the perfect measurements. They didn't say 36A, or 36B or C, so it was kind of hazy. Most guys I know are like me in that we like curves. The skinny thing just doesn't do it for most guys, and that doesn't mean we need big racks either. Just some nice curves. Remember, for every body shape, there's a guy who thinks it's perfect.

  34. QUESTION:
Has anyone bought and worn 'Lipo In A Box'? Women's body shaping undergarment...on...?
    ...Oprah today.
It looked like it's too good to be true. The women who modeled it under outfits looked slim, firm and actually taller. I'm just wondering if it could possible be comfortable. It covered from below the bust to mid thigh. Has anyone tried it yet? What's your opinion? They said it was .00.

    • ANSWER:
I have it, and although I didn't see Oprah yesterday, I did just check out the website, and it's the same thing that I've used, and still do use. I love it!!! It is tight, it takes me ages to get the thing on, but once it's there, it's quite comfortable. It is quite firm, it definitely holds you in where you want it to, I feel confident when I wear it because I hate my lumps and bumps, and you don't see 'em when you wear this. As far as laundering it goes, I just throw it in the washing machine with my other "unmentionables", no problem. In the past, before I "met" this product, I would buy other body shaping garments, and while they worked to an extent, they did make me uncomfortable after wearing them for a short period of time. The thing I hated the most was how the waste would roll down, didn't look good, and most uncomfortable. The only drawback I've noticed is that when you go to the bathroom, and you need to pull it down, it can take a while because it is so tight. For me, that is a minor thing, so, in my opinion, it was and is worth every cent I spent on it.

  35. QUESTION:

  36. QUESTION:
Why are thin women not considered 'real women'?
    Just something I've noticed.

Everytime people talk about eating disorders they say: 'real women have curves', and 'men only like curvy women anyway'.
They don't realise that eating disorders have nothing to do with vanity, and that they are very serious psychiatric illnesses that ANYONE can get. You can't get an eating disorder from just looking at thin models and celebrities in magazines, and I know disordered eaters are insulted by that common misconception.

My heterosexual boyfriend likes thin women more than curvy women, and I like being thin (5'7 and 32-24-33). I don't hate curvy women, I'm not a body fascist. I'm just happy with my own natural body shape.

Women keep saying 'You don't have to be size 0 to be beautiful," but men not liking thin women is possibly the most insecure comeback in existence. Surely we've moved on from the times when pleasing men was a woman's aim in life.

What opinions have you (men and women) on this topic?
Women with eating disorders are very much 'real women', they are just misfortunate. They do, however, generally come out stronger people that any non-sufferer as they've been through so much.
I'm sure it would be every insulting for a disordered eater, male or female, not be counted as 'real'. Their mental illness was nothing something they chose to have, or could be blamed for.

And then you have the women that are naturally thin yet eat just as much as 'curvy women'. Are they not 'real women' because of their natural body shape? That is, in my opinion, what body fascism is all about.
B-rad and any other man like him: Are you judged because of your personal preference? Do people not consider you a 'real man' because of the physical appearance you find yourself attracted to?

    • ANSWER:
You touch on so many different topics.

Eating disordered women are more than unfortunate, they are very sick and there is no cure for anorexia, bulimia or obesity. I've been hospitalized for anorexia more than once. Anorexic bodies are scary and disgusting in the nude.

Bulimics are within normal weight plus or minus 10 lbs.

Many mentally healthy girls (and jockies) throw up specifically to lose weight and then end up being addicted to the whole throwing up, binge-eating, staarving, obsessing about weight and food and calories and all the rest of the sickness and go on to become full blown bulimics.

Some don't. They marry or give up their modeling or jockey job and start eating normally again after a period of adjustment.

Unless they are in some rigorous sport or work activity, very thin (underweight) women never take in the same amount of calories (without puking later) on a daily basis as 'curvy women' (women of normal weight) and stay underweight. (At least in the white, indian and black races-Orientals have a different build). It's simple math.

  37. QUESTION:
How does running change a woman's body shape?
I am kinda worried about my figure, I like the way it is, wider hips than chest, hourglass shape, will this change?? =[

    • ANSWER:
The thighs will get leaner and more muscular and the arms as well. The stomach will become smaller, but to get a really fit core you need to do some core work. My shape didn't change that much except it did make these changes I mentioned. If I was an elite runner (I wish lol) it would have gotten REALLY thin and muscular.

I wouldn't worry about how much your body changes; you will see some differences but you will like the differences. =)

  38. QUESTION:
Fellas- Do the women in hip-hop videos influence the type of women you are attracted to?
I've noticed that in hip-hop vids the women look (body shape etc) and dress differently than women in r&b vids/love songs. which do you prefer...and none of that "it's what's inside ish"

    • ANSWER:
Dont be fooled its the same girl in an evening dress. Okay no "ish". I've always like a little extra junk in the trunk. Way before they in the videos.

  39. QUESTION:
Could the sudden attraction to waif-like women have to do with the population?
People can argue this or not, but a woman with fuller hips and fuller breasts is often times more fertile than a woman with a boyish figure. That is the reason women are shaped the way they are in the first place, to aid childbirth. Strangely enough, I have noticed men being more attracted to abnormally skinny women who often have trouble giving birth (read about almost all the celebrity births and they almost always had fertility treatments and c-sections) and look down on women with a real woman's body. Maybe this is because of a subconcious sense of overpopulation and a desire to have less children without even realizing it.

    • ANSWER:
      Interesting theory.

But it could also be argued that the "thin idealization" only happens in modernized countries and not so much in third-world countries, where access to modern family planning is generally less prevelant so there are generally more births. If this was an evolutionary process, you would find people in overpopulated third-world countries liking thin women, rather than those in developed countries like the U.S.

Rather, it could be that in places where food is overabundant, being thin suggests one would likely survive longer. After all, obesity has been proven to shorten lifespans.

      I like your theory, though.

  40. QUESTION:
There are many body shapes and sizes. What body shape do men find to be sexiest???
Women's sizes run from short, tall, skinny, heavy, etc... I am 5'3" and 145 lbs. I think I'm 15 lbs. too heavy but my guy friends say I'm just "thick" and look good. I think they're humoring me so as not to hurt my feelings.
I thought men liked a woman to be thin (not skinny). So guys, tell us what body shape on a woman you think looks good.

    • ANSWER:
Thin as a grin is no longer in, I'm afraid. Guys like their women to be healthy, and that means athletic with a nice comfortable roll. 15lbs overweight is nothing at all, and I'll bet it looks good on you. Besides, most guys are really concerned with what's in your eyes, not what's on your thighs.

  41. QUESTION:
What do you think of an hourglass figure for a woman?
    1. Do you think it's the most attractive body shape a woman can have?

    2. Is an hourglass figure really the "natural" way women's bodies look? Because if that's true...why are hourglass figures relatively uncommon compared to the other shapes?

    3. Are most women with hourglass figures considered "plus-sized"? (large breasts, curves, wide hips) Or can hourglass figures be really anyone--from slender to average to overweight?

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
what's natural is that we're all a little different... even identical twins... tall to petite women can have hourglass figures... both fat and skinny women can have hourglass figures... it's determined by our bust-waist-hip ratio... so now that i've answered the question i have to say us ladies really need to stop focusing on our bodies... men do that enough for the lot of us!!!

  42. QUESTION:
Why has a skinnier body shape become the ideal version of beauty for women today?
In the 50's, I think, a fuller, curvy body shape (such as Marilyn Monroe) was ideal. The fuller body was considered the most beautiful for women. Nowadays, since the 80's I believe, we see models with flat, thin bodies. Why has this ideal of beauty changed so much?
When I say has become ideal I mean that magazines and models are all one skinny size, and girls and women tend to look up to and want to be like models.
TROJANBO-- your answer has almost no connection to my question. I am not asking what men prefer by any means! I want to know why beauty has CHANGED.

    • ANSWER:
Blame the fashion industry. Clothes fit better on a slim frame, and since the 1960s skinny models have become the norm on runways. Those models with even a little bit of meat on them have to go into lingerie and swimsuit modeling.

Truly voluptuous women are rare in women's fashion and beauty magazines.

  43. QUESTION:
POLL: What's YOUR idea of the ideal female body shape?
I'm aware that the inside is what counts , but I'm talking pure aesthetic here. And don't say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I know, I'm asking what YOU PERSONALLY find attractive. Men what body is most attractive and women what body do you want?

  46. QUESTION:
Why do women hate their bodies?
    I don't get it.
Some women are naturally skinny, like supermodels.
They can actually wear almost anything, they look fab in swim suits.
Others have a curvy, pear shaped body or hourglass body and they are very womanly and look confident.

Why do women then want to be something they're not?
Both types are beautiful in their own ways.

If youre skinny like paris hilton show off your long pins and flat stomach, don't try to cover it up.

If you have a booty like beyonce or J'Lo don't try to cover it up and loose the weight, it's a gift, not useless weight.

all you out there tell me why girls are so insecure about their shapes?

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like a cliche, but it's true: the media makes us hate ourselves because of the "perfect" women who are paraded in front of us consciously and subconsciously everywhere we look. It makes men have poor misconceptions of women, too, and that can have consequences for us. When I was a teen, my father told me I "needed to get my gut under control" (looking back, it was so not true). From that point on, I had an unhealthy perception of myself and thought I was fat, when I was not. I was mortified walking across my college campus because I erroneously believed I was a whale, when I was not. Years later (and pounds heavier), I have finally come to accept myself and love my body for what it is. I am more confident than ever now, but I still really resent the things my father said to me as a kid. It was hurtful, and I wonder if his views were tainted by the media just as much as women's views of themselves are. Women, love yourselves! You are all beautiful, especially the big and beautiful girls.
